The “No Stopping” and “No Waiting” symbols are unusual amongst British road signs as they are not pictograms. The symbols are both used as part of signs, and the “No Stopping” symbol is used by itself as the sign for “Clearway” restrictions, where no stopping is allowed on the carriageway at any time. Signs with “no waiting” usually allow loading and picking up or setting down passengers, but signs with “no stopping” usually do not.

Clearways are usually used on rural roads and dual carriageways. Unlike yellow line and red line restrictions, they apply only to the carriageway of the road, unless extra signs are placed to add a restriction to the footways and/or verges.
